TV : Is there a lot of pressure to get into a certain university at your school? I’m into musical theater and I have that side of me, and I get exposed to different things, but I still kind of am the same. Money is a constant thing that we are thinking about, whether we want to or not, I guess.ĭD: To be honest, not really. I think the rationale is we want to be able to live in San Francisco when we’re older, and rent is so expensive here, so that’s a very real problem a lot of families are faced with. TV : Do you think that what’s cool impacts what people want to study?ĭP: Everybody wants to go into economics or finance or some business thing because we all want to make a lot of money. Like, I’ll be there playing songs from Dear Evan Hansen pretty much every day. We actually have a baby grand piano, so all the musicians kind of congregate around the piano during lunchtime and in the mornings.
Kaelyn Walker: I think the general things that are popular at my school have to be dance, sports, and music. Some teachers will hop on the trend and do it with their students. There are always people making TikToks in the morning, at lunchtime, between classes, even in classes with teachers. PA: Charli D’Amelio lives about 20-25 minutes away from us and goes to a nearby school that competes with ours in sporting and academics and stuff. Everyone’s like, “Oh, I’m so unique, I listen to Rex Orange County and Frank Ocean. While people do follow the very mainstream influencers like Addison Rae and Charli and Lil Huddy, no one wants to be them. Anything music that’s trending on TikTok is probably in everybody’s playlists.ĭP: I think a lot of people are trying to escape from that. There’s a much higher emphasis on being unique and very academic over the jock-y type.ĭru Donald: I will say TikTok has influenced our school so much, so there are the e-boys and e-girls, the VSCO girls and VSCO boys, and then those people who just dress casual. It’s much more popular to try and be edgy and artsy rather than preppy and athletic.
Danielle Park: It’s a very big thing in the San Francisco independent schools to have the skater aesthetic.
